EMX1-SD won't turn on - loose contact within the EMX

Postby sshyperion on Tue Sep 09, 2014 6:27 am

Hello all! It's been a while but life and free time have ordained that I will be using my EMX1-SD more regularly. However, it looks like it's not properly turning on. A year ago I noticed that I had to wiggle the wire at the base of the EMX1-SD itself, shifting up or down slightly to contact and run. Now it's got to the point where that doesn't work.

I've tried to do and check the following, which currently doesn't work (but did a few times in the past):

  • re-seat the AC adapter (at the EMX input side) itself with no success. A few previous instances had re-seating fix the issue but now it won't at all. I've also tried to partially re-seat into the port itself bu no success
  • The AC adapter appears fine, solid green light on the bar itself and all hooked up to a surge protector and UPS.
  • Switch AC outlets and re-seat the plugs on the adapter itself
  • Wiggle the cable at the base of the EMX1-SD up and down. Light touching originally fixed it, then more firm movement, but nothing at all
  • Disconnected headphones and any other non DC/AC cabling
  • Removed the SD card in the SD-card slot

Is there anything else I can check/do before looking for help professionally?

Sounds to me like a new AC input is needed. That's not a big deal, other than the time it takes to open up the machine. I haven't looked to see what it takes, but most of those sorts of parts are pretty off-the-shelf. Got a good tech near you?

I'm sourcing some good friends who are electronics-repair-savvy. Otherwise I will be making some calls for local AV/repair shops for assistance. From what I can tell, the top panel uses torx screws but I'm not certain. Thank you for the response!

Will do. If I've friends doing the repair, I'll do a play-by-play ala iFixit and see how it goes.

Status update! So I had a friend check as well as me buying a multimeter. It looks like the AC Adapter is dead in the water. The cable between the converter block to the Electribe has a break somewhere within the primary contact or along the line itself. Either way, I'm looking to source an official replacement ($45-$60 dependent on where I look), as I'm not comfortable finding a replacement on ebay that is meant for laptops with the same DCV and Amperage requirements.

Final update and yes, it's taken this long!

So the AC adapter between the DC converter block and the input to the EMX was dry-soldered or damaged somehow. I ordered a replacement and waited 6 months before the local store couldn't figure out why it was taking so long. I contacted a local KORG Canada distributor and found out KORG is notorious for taking months to get OEM parts produced outside of the original equipment bundled with it. Finally after 2 weeks after ordering, and almost a year later, the EMX is back online.

Glad to hear it! Erm ... even if it was an ordeal!
