How To: Group Edit Drum and Synth parts SIMULTANEOUSLY

Postby danwall on Tue Jan 18, 2011 12:13 pm

I have always struggled with the inbetween when it comes to having parts muted or live. If I want to fade in nicely i have to quickly tap between parts while slowly turning the volume knob up hoping they all line up well and I wanted a way to 'bus' certain parts into groups and control their parameters as one. I recently found that if you apply the LPF or HPF fx and activate it on whichever parts you want to control as a group, you can do so by tweaking the fx edit 1 and 2!

For instance, if you have a 3 part drum beat you want to be able to fade in and out instead of cut it from on to off, you just apply fx1 to each part and make fx1 the LPF. While playing the track you just tweak the fx edit 1 knob (make sure you are set to fx1 in the fx area as well as on each part) and viola! You get much more control of parts, with less button mashing. Instead of having to edit each parameter for each part individually they are all grouped into a easy to use filter effect.

This offers a variety of different sound when also tweaking your cutoff synth filter knob as well as the osc 1 and 2 edits. just experiment to find cool variations and patterning!

Here is a link to a track I made as an example showing the drum part being altered in the manner I just described!

This is a great tip! I noticed denkitribe doing the same thing recently and just started using this technique in live situations. Works great to add variation to a track too.

Good stuff :D
