Using Dual Oscillator for accurate harmonies

Tired of using up two synth parts to generate a harmony line? Here's how you can use the Dual Osc synth to get accurate harmonies out of just one synth part. First, a list of the harmonies and the settings. The way the second oscillator's pitch is changed is not through a series of distinct steps, but through a microtonal blending of pitches. This list shows the pitch setting of the second oscillator and the harmony it generates in relation to the main oscillator. To change the pitch, use the "Osc Edit 2" knob.

To use these numbers to generate harmonies, you'll have to record a motion sequence. It's best to use the "Trig Hold" sequence option. Begin recording the sequence, and turn the "Osc Edit 2" knob for the Dual Synth part. You don't have to accurately land on the harmony numbers, but it will be helpful to move it to the number that will pop up most often when you go back to edit it. (Example, record the motion sequence with the edit knob at 25 if there will be more minor 3rd harmonies than anything else). After the motion is recorded, stop playback and enter the "Step Edit" menu, where the recently recorded motion sequence information will be present. You will have to manually edit each harmony number by scrolling through the steps of the pattern. It helps to turn the "keyboard" function off so you can see which step keys are lit for the synth parts, you can then just press those keys knowing there is a note being played at that moment in the sequence. After editing the motion sequence, play the pattern back and adjust the balance between oscillators 1 and 2. You will hear harmonies! Now you have a whole synth part freed up to do whatever with. Enjoy!

EDIT: These numbers will also work in reverse, but the harmony generated will be different if Osc 2 is a LOWER pitch than Osc 1, keep this in mind.

Hello !

I'm very interested in this tip, but due to my poor english, I don't understand quite well the manipulations required.
Is it possible to have a video tut or a sketch (or something this kind) please ?

I understand the first number, but not the second in parentheses. Is it the first button ?
And I don't understand what kind of motion sequence you have to record in order to edit it. I'm a bit confused with these steps.
i precise, I know how to record a motion sequence and edit steps. But I don't get the "logic" of this tip.

Maybe I simply lack of musical knowledge... Sorry if I bother.

Oh boy, I'm sorry it's taken forever to respond to this. I don't know if you'll ever read this reply, but if not hopefully you persevered and figured it out. Anyway...

The number in parentheses is the same interval value, but two octaves higher. So, the first octave is 47, and the second octave is 63. I know, I know, technically the thirds and other intervals aren't called thirds when they're more than an octave above the root note... but you get the idea.

You need to record a trig motion sequence, and have use it on osc value 2. Then, use the edit button under the main screen and go into the motion sequence edit menu. It's easier if you press the red-lighted button that says "Keyboard", because then you see the synth notes the same way you see the drum parts, as x0x style sequences. Press the buttons on the step sequencer that are lit up under the motion edit menu, and adjust the parameter of the motion sequence until the harmonies are correct.

Yes, this does sound complicated. It's pretty easy to actually do, though. I hope this helps. I may make a video if it's still difficult to figure out... I can understand if my explanation isn't very good!
