I have the mpc 2000xl. I bought it back in 2003 for 1,300 brand new with the zip drive installed.
Looking back at it now, i think i was still using my ES-1 more than my MPC.
The 2k is pretty bare bones....i still havent come around to installing any additional RAM, so im stuck with 21 seconds of sample time. Installing the RAM is also very tedious, one wrong move and you'll fry the machine.
I will say that the sound on the mpc is very clean...and the noise floor level on the master output is also very silent as compared to the ESX.
Ive never really liked the outrageous price of the accesories either....350 dollars for a frikkin Effects card for the 2k??? LOL come on akai.

The 500 sounds cool though, I might pick one up...its everything the 2k should of been 9 years ago.

Picked up one of these instead of a MPC. I like it so far. Still reading the manual but it seems pretty solid.

Hi

I read about low output with the Akai MPC 500 - what do you think?
When you own one and an Electribe you might compare the output

What I am really looking for is a good tool to really play the rhythm - but not on a keyboard. I noticed I would play it different and thought one of the MPCs would do

On the MPC's the main output decibel level is changeable. you can choose anywhere from -10,-0...+6, +12Db's in the main menu screen.
Kinda wish the tribes had this option, sometimes it's very useful.

OK - but what about the 500?
In german critics they wrote about the low output. I would compare this to the Kaoss Pad and Kaoss Pad Mini: the mini has almost ridiculous output.

And maybe the MPC is not the right tool for me. I am seriously looking for a tool to really play for example drums. But not on a real drumset

My aunt had an Ensoniq ASR-10. Lovely workstation. I grew up learning electronic music on the TS-12, a non-sampler version of the ASR with weighted keys...although I found a program online that I could convert samples from PC into the format for the Ensoniq so I did that near the end of my time with it...

At one time I had convinced my buddy to get the ASR-X, but it was made sooooo poorly. The dial jumped around like a rabbit and one of the pads was useless, so he ended up returning it to musician's friend where he bought it and got a couple of guitar pedals instead.

Been looking at the MC-909 today...that box seems like a nice blend of workstation vs. performance groovebox. It certainly has delicious specs on paper...I'm just wondering how the layout is control wise. Sometimes the best looking stuff on paper can be the most poorly implemented as well.

I had a 909 for a couple of years. The only reason I sold it was that I just never could get the sounds out of the XV engine that I really wanted. It's powerful, easy to get around, and loaded with features. Had I been able to pull the kinds of noises out of it I can get with the EMX, I'd have never gotten rid of it.

Now were they to combine the two ...

If you get one, spend some time with the manual and you'll be up and running fairly quickly. It's a breeze to use - IF you spend time with it. Once you do, you'll find it fairly intuitive.

I've used one for a few hours and the sounds where good ...but the sequencing on it was a nightmare..especially if you are used to the tribes....

stop... record ... metronome ding dang .. program play ... stop record program...play... ahhweeee
